Working with Symbology

To create a useful map of the park we need to change the way the data is displayed. Skip to video.

Double click on a layer to open the property window. Start with the Kakadu tenure polygon.
With symbology selected set the Kakadu tenure polygon to no fill (No Brush).

Next change the display of the watercourse data:

1.       Choose the symbology tools
2.       Change the display type to ‘Categorised”
3.       Choose the ‘Hierarchy’ as the attribute column to display
4.       Press the Classify Button
5.       Double click on a watercourse type to open the symbol selector and change the color and line size for the major and minor watercourses.

For the roads data use “Category” as the attribute to to apply your layer symbols. Deselect (un-tick) all of the category types other than the Pastoral Local, Secondary and State Arterial. The other road types are too small to bother with displaying on our map.

Once you have the roads and rivers symbology complete your Kakadu map should look something like this.

Now add Kakadu Habitat data. You will find the Kakadu Habitat shape file (kak_hab_a) in the Kakadu folder.

1.       Choose the symbology tools
2.       Change the display type to ‘Categorised”
3.       Choose the ‘Group’ as the attribute column to display
4.       Press the Classify Button

Choose some appropriate colours for each habitat type
